Q: How many COVID vaccines are there? How many total doses are recommended as of fall 2023?

A: As of September 2023, CDC recommends that all U.S. residents 6 months and older receive one dose of updated Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty) or Moderna (Spikevax) mRNA vaccine. This recommendation applies to all individuals, regardless of previous COVID-19 vaccination history.

Both mRNA vaccines have been reformulated to protect against XBB.1.5, a lineage similar to the subvariants that are currently prevalent. (Novavax recombinant subunit protein vaccines remain available to those who cannot or will not receive mRNA vaccines.)
