New immunotherapy for leukemia shows promise in small clinical trial
A clinical trial of a new immunotherapy against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has shown promising results. The treatment, developed at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, harnesses the immune system’s “natural killer” cells, putting them through a training period in the lab to help them attack leukemia cells in the blood. Responses to the treatment were observed in five of nine patients that could be evaluated, which is considered promising because the patients had a poor prognoses and few options.
